Crib Safety

  • There must not be more than 6 cm (2.5 in) between the bars.
  • The mattress must not be more than 15 cm (6 in) thick, and it must be firm and well adjusted. You should not be able to pass more than two fingers between the side of the crib and the mattress.
  • When the side of the crib is raised, there should be at least 66 cm (26 in) between the lowest position of the mattress support system and the top of the side.
  • The corner bracket must not be more than 3 mm (3/2 in) high.
  • The top of the corner posts (if there are any) must be small and round so that the baby's clothes cannot get hooked.
  • The mattress support must be fastened securely. The mattress must not detach when you push underneath, when you shake the crib, or when you hit up and down on it.
  • The crib must have a label containing the name of the manufacturer, the model number. and the manufactured date. It is illegal to sell or give away cribs that were manufactured before 1986.
  • The instructions to assemble the crib should be clear and easy to read.
